I’ll be blunt. For the most part, 2025 was like a waking nightmare, especially when I look back. It started bad and it ended with the feeling of barely holding my head above treading water. My mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 TNBC in January and she fought every single day until her last breath in the wee hours of October 23rd. I was thankful to have the flexibility to be able to be with her for each and every appointment, surgery, chemo treatment, ER trip, hospital stay, rehab, and finally within the comfort of her own space. She kept this diagnosis very close to heart and so not many of her friends (or even family) knew what was happening. My mom was very private about her grief over losing my dad, and she was even more so about this. It hurt watching her hurt. The only comfort and relief I felt was when she was finally reunited with his spirit. They are meant to be together…in whatever capacity that has become.
While I had to refrain from saying yes to every opportunity so I could be available to my mom, there were so many wonderful folks I was able to capture and celebrate this year! Elopements and weddings, portraits, families, editorials, and so much more! While I put personal photography projects and traveling on hold, I did get to release some of that creative energy in the form of music! I play with some of my best friends and we had some super fun shows and even put out a cassette! We have so many ideas for 2026 and I am stoked to see what comes of them! I ended the year with a heavy heart that is beginning to find its way to the surface. I am trying to stay grounded, and also allow my mind to start wandering the creative realm again.
Also, moving our record store and my photo studio twice within 6 months (for floor repair) really shook up a bunch of shit! I’m letting go of excess gear and finally getting closer to getting the Airstream darkroom setup – the interior is now painted black and the perfect spot to already do work like changing photo booth paper. Over time, I’ll get the interior set up as I decide the best way to create a flow in there. When we moved back in, I found a few amazing furniture pieces that gave me so much space to showcase the cameras I do collect and use for the business. I now actually have proper storage! This has definitely made me purge a LOT…and I will continue to do so. Swing by the studio if you’re in need of cameras, enlargers, lenses, bags, and other supplies!
Although I haven’t had a chance to post the full sessions of most of these to my website just yet, it’s fun to peek back through all the moments! I just can’t thank everyone enough who I crossed paths with this year. New folks and several returning friends…everyone was so kind! I needed these smiles to help balance the heaviness that felt like a cloud that was hanging over this year. Now that the skies have parted and I’m calming down my nervous system, I’m hopeful for a fruitful and joyous 2026. The three main things I’m calling in are creativity, connection, and new explorations. Anyway, on to the memories…
